Just three days
after announcing that WhatsApp had been purchased by Facebook, Koum advanced
that they were working to introduce voice calls in the coming months. The WhatsApp voice calling service
would “focus on simplicity,” said the company’s chief executive Jan Koum, at
the Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona, Spain. The service would
first be released for the iPhone and the Android, followed by Microsoft’s
Windows Phone, and some Blackberry and Nokia phones, reports the Wall Street
Journal.
“We’re adding voice to WhatsApp so
people can stay in touch with friends and loved ones no matter where they are
in the world”, explained Koum. Trying to outdo rivals like Viber and
Skype, Whatsapp’s aim is to make voice calling just as speedy and efficient as
their text messaging service.
